Stand-alone battery energy storage systems

Stand-alone BESS have their own grid connection and operate independently of generation assets such as solar PV or wind. They are particularly suitable when the storage system is intended to be used flexibly in the power market — for example, charging when prices are low and discharging when prices are high, or providing services to stabilize the grid. The key advantage: the battery storage system is not tied to a specific generation plant and can therefore be operated and commercialized with maximum flexibility.

Planning note: For stand-alone projects, grid operators often review the grid connection especially closely. The reason is that, depending on the operating strategy, a battery storage system can both draw and feed in high power — and this must be fully aligned with the grid, protection systems, and metering. As a result, permitting and grid-connection processes may take longer, depending on the responsible parties and the region.

Co-located battery storage systems (e.g., PV or wind + storage)

For battery storage systems connected to a generation asset (co-located), infrastructure and the grid connection are shared. The storage system absorbs surplus electricity that would otherwise be curtailed or exported at unfavorable times. This helps make better use of renewable energy and shift feed-in to more advantageous periods. In many cases, this improves project economics because the existing grid connection capacity can be utilized more effectively.

Especially when an asset is already operating on site, implementation can often progress faster: the grid connection, metering concept, and many technical fundamentals are already in place and “only” need to be expanded in a sensible way. In addition, storage systems combined with renewable generation typically benefit from the legal priority given to electricity from renewable sources. This can simplify coordination with the relevant authorities — although timelines still depend on the local grid operator and permitting authority.

Behind-the-meter / on-site storage (industrial & commercial)

These battery storage systems are installed directly at industrial or commercial facilities — “behind the meter.” The focus is on optimizing self-consumption: self-generated electricity can be stored and then used exactly when the business needs it. These systems are not automatically tied to grid electricity. They can also be charged directly with power from existing on-site PV or wind assets and, if needed, additionally use grid electricity — depending on objectives, operating concept, and the power supply contract. This can increase self-consumption and profitability, reduce peak loads, and improve security of supply.
